Tip of the day: Check for duplicates on your credit report. When I was younger, I finished college having a nice big school loan. Along with that loan of course came credit cards. I got into the working scene and because I was living at home, started to put some money away. Not much because I was paying that school loan an credit cards but I did manage to put a few thousand dollars in the bank.

Around that time, I decided it was much better to own than rent. So, I went condo shopping. I met with a realtor who hooked me up with a mortgage broker. He pulled my credit and with the exception of having one late payment, all looked to be good. But wait, I was told. Why are you not paying on this student loan? I said that I have been. Once I was out of school about 5 or 6 months I made a payment each and every month. The mortgage broker countered that something must be amiss because I was showing two school loans for exactly the same original amount. In other words, I was showing duplicate loans on the credit report. The mortgage broker said that this situation would have to be taken care of before a loan could be granted on the condo that I liked.

So with his help, I set out to prepare a letter to send to each of the credit reporting agencies regarding my dispute. In other words, a dispute letter. Within 3 weeks or so, this duplicate loan on the credit report was removed from all three credit bureaus. Within another couple of weeks, I closed on the condo and all worked out well. Moral of the story. Get your free annual credit report and keep on top of your credit.

How to Write a Bad Credit Repair Letter

Credit repair letters are usually addressed to credit reporting agencies, collectors, or creditors through bad credit holders. Credit experts say that it is tough to write a credit repair letter. People write these letters, in an attempt to settle credit claims with creditors. Some individuals write them, when they suddenly find misappropriate details on their credit scores.

To write an offer in negotiation, to write estoppels or validate a debt all seem very difficult. Thus, it becomes essential to study all about credit repair letters, if you want to write it down efficiently.

Sample Credit Repair Letters:

Many websites provide dozens of bad credit repair letters for reference. Therefore, there is no need to contact any credit repair agency for writing letters. Different kinds of credit repair letters are available based on different scenarios.

Sample letters intended for credit agencies are available with topics such as erroneous credit scores, request for credit analysis and dispute over bankruptcy listings. More sample letters on request are, to combine the spouse’s credit record and to rectify the credit details after insolvency. You may also avail letters to demand for a free credit statement.

Settlement and judgment related credit repair letters are also available on the Internet. Bad credit repair letters, which have to be sent to creditors, include notifying the creditors about bankruptcy filing and reassertion of the loan contract to creditor following the bankruptcy. Next, you may also obtain letters on topic such as, demanding your creditor to include positive details in your credit reports.

These letters are easy to copy and paste from the Internet. After obtaining a letter, you may add your own information into it. Next, you need to send this letter via a certified mail service.

Tips to Write Credit Repair Letters:

You as a consumer possess the rights to verify the details that credit-reporting bureaus hold on you, specially, if you were denied a loan for up to $45,000. In such a case, you are entitled to know the contact details and name of credit reporting bureaus, who handed your credit report details onto to your lender, who refused your loan application.

Here, you can write a letter to the lender within a month after hearing from the credit reporting bureaus. After this, the lender is entitled to provide you with all the requested credit details within a week of obtaining your letter.

Many people make mistake of writing credit repair letters as threatening letters. Individuals have to write bad credit repair letters in such a manner that it needs to depict that they are going through lot of frustration. People can also request for internal settlement.

Sometimes, people may not know the exact e-mail address, where they have to send the credit repair letters. In this scenario, search engine might be a good option. Most companies have websites with all major e-mail addresses listed.

Another tip is to avoid using the exact replica of the letter format available on the Internet. It is much better to use own words than a ready-made formatted credit repair letter.

What Are The Components Of Credit Repair Letters?

Credit repair is essential since it enables the consumer to correct wrong information and mistakes that could be found in a credit report.

What happens is that, the consumer writes a letter to the credit agencies disputing the information found on the report or to validate a debt. Validation letters are usually sent to the debt collection agencies. Other instance where you can write such a letter is during the negotiating of a settlement and settlement letters to creditors.

Hector Milla Editor of the “Best Credit Repair Agencies” website — http://www.BestCreditRepairAgencies.com — pointed out;

“…After you get your credit report, it is important to read it immediately to find out if there is anything incorrect. This way, you ensure that you write the dispute letter as soon as possible and send it to the relevant authorities. If the errors you found appears in all the agencies dealing with credit reports; Trans Union, Experian and Equifax. You will have to send the letter to all of them for correction, although you still have to send to all of them regardless…”

The letter usually contains your name and address in full and written correctly. Your telephone number, account number, social security number must also be included. Then you state the problem or the reason why you are writing that letter. Make sure you explain clearly what part of the report you find incorrect and why it should be removed immediately because maybe you have evidence to prove it.

It could be, for example, a loan that you had completed payment but is showing otherwise. You can include something that will verify that you actually paid the debt in full and on time so they could easily make the changes.

With the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you have all the rights to dispute and it is the responsibility of the credit report agency to investigate and correct disputed data. Inaccurate data only serves to portray you negatively hurting your credit score and should be removed as soon as possible.

“…The sooner you write and send your credit repair letter, the better. You can find a professional in credit reporting to write you the letter if you find it difficult to write on your own…” added H. Milla.

Copyright (c) 2010 Suzy Vanstrusen

We often hear the advice to check on our credit report at least twice a year. But surprisingly, there are people who do not really know what to do next after finding out that their credit report is indeed, inaccurate. Some are intimidated about writing a credit repair letters, not knowing what to say or how to address the problem. In this article, we will talk about what you should do if you find errors, omissions or any inaccuracy in your credit report.

Verify the wrong information. Before even thinking about filing a dispute, make sure that you are in the position to complain. Look closely in your credit report and carefully analyze the items that seem to be erroneous. For instance, if you think the charges are incorrect or have already been paid, check your receipts or past billing statements. You do not want to go through the process of disputing only to find that you were the one mistaken all along. If you really think that you have a valid reason to file a dispute, then you can now proceed to the next step.

Send a dispute letter. Where should you send your dispute letter? This should be sent to the credit bureau who issued your credit report. In order to ensure that your complaint will get the attention it deserves, address your letter to the Complaint Department of the Bureau.

Observe correct letter format. A letter of dispute is a business letter and therefore you should observe correct formatting. Your personal information- complete name, address, telephone number and e-mail address- should be written at the top of your letter so that the bureau would immediately know who is sending the letter and where to send their response.

Explain the problem clearly. You can observe sample credit dispute letter from the web but it is recommended that you compose your own letter. Enumerate the items you want to dispute and explain why you want them to be corrected or deleted from your credit file. Clearly state if the item you are disputing is wrong or incomplete.

Be polite and request the credit bureau to correct these wrong information in your credit report. Include a copy of your credit report and mark the items in dispute so you can refer to them in your letter more easily.

Send copies of supporting documents. If you have bills, receipts, transaction records that can help in clarifying the items you are disputing, enclose them in your letter as this can speed up the result of the investigation. You must also enumerate all the documents you have enclosed in the mail at the last part of your letter.

Follow up. It will usually take up to 30 days before the investigation is completed. Nevertheless, it is also recommended to make a follow-up call regarding the status of your dispute at least a week after sending your letter. This way, you would know for sure that your letter has been received and that action is already taking place.

The current state of our nation’s economy has many consumers reevaluating their financial situation and seeking ways to improve upon it. And while the need for credit repair is garnering increased awareness (after all, it can help consumers acquire better rates on home mortgages and car loans, and even affect employment opportunities), how to go about repairing your credit can be a frustrating, bewildering and downright overwhelming process.

While the title of this article implies that there’s one of two ways to go about credit repair (DIY or credit repair service), the truth is that the best approach is a combination of the two. However, without a dedicated effort on the part of the consumer, no credit repair service will be able to single-handedly improve a credit report or score. (Any credit repair service that offers a 100% guarantee is not being truthful, and should be avoided.) Credit repair is a team effort that requires patience and determination from both the consumer and the credit repair service. A good credit repair service can provide guidelines, consultation and a strong game plan, but it is you, the consumer, that is ultimately in control of your own financial destiny.

Credit repair is really no different than any other kind of repair in that, if you want, you can do it yourself. You can also repair your car or do your taxes by yourself, if you want, but few consumers choose to do so because of time constraints and a lack of accountability. On that same note, just because you’ve entrusted your vehicle to a mechanic or your taxes to an accountant doesn’t mean you want to turn your back on the matter altogether. More often than not, you work with the person repairing (or preparing) to make sure that none of the actions taken, or repairs made, are against your will. Credit repair should be approached in the same manner.

Good, credible credit repair companies aren’t pulling your leg when they tell you that credit repair can be difficult. To start, reparation may mean contacting dozens – or even hundreds – of creditors and the three major credit bureaus, depending on the specific details of a person’s credit report. Each dispute requires a written letter of inquiry, and it can take 30 to 45 days after a creditor has received the dispute just to review the letter and respond.

Furthermore, consumer rights, as well as credit laws and policies, are constantly changing, making it difficult for the average consumer to stay up-to-date with current procedures. However, accredited, trusted credit repair services tend to be proactive when it comes to credit law, reviewing new policies and procedures on a regular basis in order to ensure compliance.

Aside from credibility, accuracy and efficiency, credit repair services usually provide convenience. Because more often than not, do it yourself efforts are bogged down by a lack of time, experience and knowledge of credit laws and policies. Legitimate credit repair services are a trusted alternative that are usually worth their value in the long run.

Ultimately, whether or not you pay for a credit repair service is entirely up to you, but be sure to take into consideration all the variables of credit repair when making your decision. Many credit repair services offer a free consultation, so if you’re not sure you should take advantage of this offer so that you might better determine your options. After all, credit repair is very important, but so, too, is doing it right.

Do It Yourself Credit Repair Letters

Do it yourself credit repair letters are available all over the web. These are there for the taking by anyone prepared to roll up their sleeves and get down to business. The very fact that you are reading this proves that you definitely qualify because you are already doing your research. Learning the process is key. You don’t need a formal education to do this. You just need to know how to read and write and how to get a copy of your credit report, which you can either pay for or you can get it for free. You will also need some time for this. The process is not overly complicated, but it will take a bit of effort to get everything lined up and get this done.

Do it yourself credit repair letters require that you have a few things on hand:

1. A copy of your credit report. (You will have a better sense of the results you are getting if you see what credit score you are starting at out.)

2. Sufficient paper to print your credit dispute letters on, and sufficient envelopes to send them in.

3. A copy of a utility bill.

4. Your driver’s license with the address matching your current address. (If you recently moved, you need to update your DL or ID.) If you don’t have a DL, a state ID can work too.

5. Your social security card is also necessary.

You need your credit report because you need to look it over and decide which do it yourself credit repair letters you will need to make. This is really not an option. The paper and envelopes are requirements too. This cannot be done by email.

The last three items are also important. When you mail the credit dispute letters, you have to send sufficient identification along with them so the credit reporting agencies can be assured that it is definitely you sending the credit dispute letters. Your Driver’s License, the household bill and your social security card make up the identification that enable the credit reporting agencies to proceed with your claims. You will take them and copy them onto a single sheet of paper, which you will enclose with each letter. Each letter must be sent in a separate envelope.

Keep Track Of Do It Yourself Credit Repair Letters

Don’t do anything that might cause your credit dispute letters to get thrown away by the credit bureaus. Following these simple steps will help ensure that your letters get the attention they deserve.

You basically have three choices when you need to fix your credit and i will briefly cover those choices in the article below, hopefully i can help you decide what option is best for you and get you going down the path to a higher credit score.

Options You Have To Fix your Credit

Wait It Out- This is the easiest to accomplish but will take years to have an effect. Most bad credit marks can stay on your credit report for 7-10 years. So if you can wait that long then go for it, but most people cannot wait it out and need a faster more effective credit repair method.

Pay For credit Repair- many people think that a paid credit repair company is going to fix their credit fast. While it is true that these companies that charge you hundreds to thousands of dollars are convenient the truth is they will not fix your credit very fast but rather drag out the process to make more money off of you. Unfortunately most of these companies do little to nothing to help your credit scores but they will drain you wallet fast!

Perform Self Credit Repair- This is the best and most effective method to fix your bad credit fast. It will cost you under $100 and because you are working on it you know for sure that there is 100% effort and dedication behind it. Unfortunately most people are unsure how to perform this process and get scared off. But with a good self credit repair kits its easy to accomplish and many great credit repair kits can be purchased easily online.

Where Can I Learn More About Credit Repair Kits

If you’re dealing with bad credit, you’re certainly not alone. Thousands of Americans have found themselves in this situation after living beyond their means, losing their jobs, or simply finding that they no longer fit into the new definition of a good credit score. If you’re at a loss for how to repair your credit, here are three credit repair mistakes to avoid when you get going on your DIY credit repair.

1. Using a Credit Repair Company

These companies are really in it for nothing but the money. They’ll end up costing you a small fortune, and they won’t do anything you can’t do on your own. The Internet is rich with resources to teach you how to repair your own credit. There is even some great credit repair software on the market right now that can help you every step of the way. In short, there’s no reason to hire a company like this. You can do this on your own with the resources that are easily available today.

2. Not Getting All Three Reports and Scores

Many people become concerned about credit repair first because they get one of their credit reports and see that it’s full of mistakes. If this is the case, it’s not unlikely that your other two reports are also riddled with problems. Over half of all credit reports have been shown to have mistakes on them, so you definitely need to check all three major credit reports and scores when you first start repairing your credit. You can get free credit reports from each company once a year, though you’ll have to pay a small fee to see your actual score. Once you’re on the road to recovery, you can just stagger your reports, getting one from each company at different times of the year.

3. Paying Down the Wrong Debt

Most people are aware that the best way to improve a credit score is to pay down some debt. The biggest part of your score, after all, is your debt to credit ratio. However, some debt weighs more heavily with your score than others. The most volatile type of bad debt in a credit company’s formula is store credit, so this should go first. Credit cards come next, and after that you can work on other types of debt. If you really want to fix your score fast, you’ll work on your debt in this particular order.

Also, for information on credit repair software visit us at creditumbrella.com.

Many Americans are weary of credit repair because a few bad apples have ruined what is actually a valuable financial service. As a result many are attempting to strike out on their own and fix their credit woes. So for those consumers interested in do-it-yourself credit repair, there is a general process you should follow. Below is a wide-ranging checklist.

Step 1: Get Your Credit Reports

You can’t know where to begin with the credit repair process if you don’t have your credit reports. Accounts on the reports from the three major bureaus are the factors that calculate your credit score. Each of the bureaus – Equifax, Transunion and Experian – will provide consumers with a free credit report every 12 months. Be sure to pull your reports from all three as they may have different items listed.

Step 2: Analyze Each Account

When you do receive your reports, carefully sift through each account to verify that it is indeed yours and that it is 100% correct. Even the slightest mistake can drop your credit score, or keep it from increasing during the repair process. Gather your bills and financial records to crosscheck with what the reports are saying.

The reports aren’t always that easy to read for newcomers as they’re full of codes and abbreviations in an attempt to keep them as short as possible. If you’re in need of help, keep an eye out for credit repair forums, where people who have been in similar situations are definitely willing to help.

Step 3: Dispute Inaccurate Accounts

If you find that there are mistakes on the reports, you need to dispute those accounts directly with the credit bureaus. Again, searching the Internet for sample letters will probably be adequate. The bureaus have 30 days by law to investigate the accounts and either validate them, update them, or remove them entirely.

This cannot be stressed enough: only dispute accounts that are incorrect. Disputing accounts that are indeed accurate is going to notify the collectors that you are trying to get out of paying them. This can make your situation much worse than it was when you started.

Step 4: Determine Total Debt

For accounts that you know are yours or that have been disputed and verified, be prepared to pay them off. If you’re really looking to improve your credit score lenders are going to want to see that you’ve taken care of all of your past debts.

Step 5: Budget and Save

Sometimes this is the hardest step of all, but it is so very necessary. Depending on the amount of debt you are in, you need to start putting away some money to pay that off. You will not be able to open new lines of credit while your reports indicate that you still have outstanding debts.

Step 6: Negotiate Debt

The type and age of your debts will dictate whether collection agencies will be willing to settle your debt for less than is owed. Generally after 6 months of non-payment, collectors are willing to take a reduced payment since they believe that if you haven’t paid in that time that they are less likely to get any sort of payment from you.

This is not to say that you should stop paying your bills in the hopes that you’ll be able to pay them off for a fraction of what you owed 6 months down the line. If you are truly trying to repair your credit, this is the worst thing you could possibly do. All of the late payments and charge-offs you will incur in the meantime will absolutely destroy your credit score.

Step 7: Open New, Positive Accounts

The consumers with strong credit profiles tend to have 3 to 5 lines of revolving credit. Depending on how many cards you currently have, do-it-yourself credit repair is going also going to involve opening up new lines of credit that will add to your credit score. This is because lenders want to see that you are currently able to use credit responsibly. Look into secured credit cards with you current or local bank.

Step 8: Pay Your Bills

It’s amazing that this should even have to be a step for someone repairing their own credit, but you would be surprised how many Americans will let their payments go late. If you’re involved in the credit repair process and you’re not paying your bills on time, you might as well just stop repairing your credit. Paying your bills on time, over the span of a few years is really the only way to truly boost your credit score.

While not an end-all checklist, this will give you the basics of what you should be doing for your DIY credit repair needs. You’re not expected to be an expert from the outset, so if you’re confused, ask questions. There are forums dedicated to credit repair and many credit repair companies give free consultations. Seek help when needed, even the simplest mistakes can delay the process or even worsen your situation.

While many people believe that getting their bad credit repaired can only be done through a professional agency, this is simply not true. By going to a credit agency, you might find that it takes a great deal more time and money than if you just worked on it yourself. Before you get in touch with a professional credit repair service, refer to the steps listed below, and you might find that repairing your own credit is not that difficult at all.

When you repair your own credit, you must understand that it is a lengthy process that requires patience. The first thing you need to do is contact credit reporting agencies in writing, and request a copy of your credit report. Federal Law states that everyone gets a free credit report annually. You can locate the three main credit-reporting agencies that you will need to get in touch with by performing an Internet search using the terms “Credit Reporting Agencies”. You might also consult your local phone directory.

Contact the agency in writing, and include the following information in your request:

1. Request a free copy of your credit report.

2. A copy of your state identification (such as your driver’s license)

3. Copy of proof of your current address (such as a utilities bill showing your home address)

4. Provide your previous addresses for the past 5 years.

5. A copy of your social security card.

6. Make sure you close the request with your signature.

Your credit report should take approximately 4-6 weeks to be generated and sent to you. If you receive a letter denying you credit, make a copy and enclose it with your written request for a copy of your credit report. If you have already received your free annual credit report permitted the free yearly report, you can use a denial letter of credit within 60 days of its receipt.

When you receive your reports from the agencies you contacted, look over each report for accuracy and discrepancies. Create a log in order to track the differences. If you find invalid accounts or errors in your reports, do not hesitate to file disputes. If you need to file a dispute, most agencies provide the forms to do so via their website. Each credit report should provide contact and account information for each creditor. Keep a log of all your debt information and creditors. Most debts older than 7 years old probably won’t appear on the report, and if so, leave them alone. Most creditors after 7 years will write off the debt, though some might continue to pursue you. Whatever the case, don’t open the Pandora’s box if the account isn’t listed on your credit report.

The next step is to contact each creditor to make payment arrangements. Most of them will be willing to work with you, while some might not be so agreeable. If a creditor is being difficult, feel free to ask for his or her supervisor or speak with someone else. Expect some creditors to be rude and unwilling to work with you. Try no to feel discouraged, be persistent, and ask to speak with someone else. Offer a settlement amount. Keep a written log of the conversation, including the person’s contact information each time you speak with a creditor.

It can take as many as 6 months to feel like you are making headway on your credit repair, but rest assured that your credit will get better within a year or two.

It is very important that while you are paying off your debts that you pay by check or money order and retain all receipts. Make sure that you request a receipt for the payment from the agency.

Continue to obtain copies of your credit reports annually from each agency. Do not create new debts while paying off your current ones. If you receive credit offers, throw them away. Remain focused on your goal to get out of debt and document your payments, contact with the creditors, their names, extension, time and date you spoke with them and list any pertinent detail regarding your conversations.

Welcome To DIY Credit Repair

Hello, I am agent 3 and I am here to help you with DIY credit repair. I call myself ’3′ as a measure of emphasis as well as to preserve my anonymity. My goal is to help educate you about your debt, credit and bill collectors. I speak for those who are in search of freedom from slavery. Slavery to the credit system. The credit system was designed to enslave you. The deeper in debt you are the more profit creditors make. Predatory lenders want you to be late on your loan or credit card payments. They want you to pay high interest and late fees. Matters are made worse when bill collectors become involved. Many collection agencies employ illegal tactics, threatening to sue you, garnish your wages, or even have you put in jail.

If you are, or have been in a situation in which you feel enslaved to the credit system, or harassed by a bill collector, I encourage you to educate yourself. Knowledge is free! With knowledge comes freedom. You can get rid of bill collectors or repair your credit on your own. You do NOT need to pay anyone! If you can dedicate a few hours a week to research, reading and writing letters you can take control. The only expense is postage! Start your education at: www.creditboards.com, and www.creditinfocenter.com. Take back your credit freedom with DIY credit repair!

Were going to address the question “Will DIY credit repair really improve my credit score?” The answer might surprise you. Credit being such a crucial part of your finances, it’s sometimes difficult to think that you, yourself can make changes to it. Most would think once something negative is there it will stay for seven years. That’s not always the case.

You can make significant changes to your credit score with a DIY manual on how to dispute and repair your credit score. Depending on the amount of repair needed DIY can be an economical option to your credit repair needs. Most credit repair services will do exactly what you will be doing with what you learn from DIY credit repair.

You will have challenges though. It’s not something you download or receive in the mail and the credit repair is on its way. You will have to dedicate some time to it. What you’ll get in return is a better understanding of credit and a better credit score. You will learn much more than you ever thought there was to credit. So it’s an investment in the long run.

So to answer the question “yes” you will see improvement on your credit with DIY credit repair programs. You can remove collection accounts, erroneous reporting’s, late payments and misreporting accounts. Depending on the accounts, you can completely remove accounts that are lowering your score. Some claim to give you the tools and understanding to remove larger derogatory problems, judgments’, liens and foreclosures.

You will learn that you can also improve your accounts in good standing. Accounts in good standings can be improved depending on how they are reported. Credit issuing companies don’t always report accounts in a manner that best benefits you. They also omit key information that can boost your credit score, just by being there. An example of this is to report your running balance but failing to report your total credit limit. You’ll learn that there isn’t just one way for them to report your account. You will be armed with the information to make sure they report your account as it best benefits you. It’s your credit take control of it.

Ok… now that you’ve highlighted the negative information on your credit report, its time to get down to the facts. Do you see any information that is at all questionable? I’m talking about incorrect balances, payments that have been incorrectly marked as late, any accounts that are not yours, chargeoffs or collection accounts which are not correct, an account that you have been paying on which is market too new to report, etc.. Remember, it is your right to dispute ANY information in your credit report that is not correct.
Having said that, I need to get on my high horse here and tell you that I’ve been a victim of identity theft multiple times and each time it has affected my credit reports and credit score. Do yourself a favor and stop identity theft today!

It is time for do it yourself credit repair.

Do it yourself credit repair involves writing a dispute letter. I’ll give you an example of a dispute letter below along with the information that you will need to send the credit bureau that is reporting the information incorrectly.

Sample Do It Yourself Credit Repair Letter

Date

Your Name

Your Social Security Number

Your Address,
City, State, Zip Code

Complaint Department
Name of Company
Address
City, State, Zip Code

To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing to dispute the following information in my file. The item(s) that are in dispute is (are) circled on my credit report.

This item (identify item(s) disputed by name and account number) is (inaccurate or incomplete) because (describe the reason why). I am requesting that the item be deleted (or request another specific change) to correct the information on my account.

(for example Bank of America VISA Acct: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx-xxx: This account is listed as being 30 days late. I have never been late on this account.)

Enclosed is a copy of my credit report (if you have any backup information supporting your dispute also include and describe the backup information). Credit reporting laws ensure that bureaus report only accurate credit information. Please remove this inaccurate information as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
Your name

Well there you have it. The above do it yourself credit repair letter is very basic but gives you a general idea of how to repair your own credit. What happens next is that the reporting agency contacts the credit in question and they have 30 days to respond regarding the dispute that you have presented. If the creditor does not respond, the dispute should be removed or corrected on your credit report. If the creditor confirms the information, you may just have to keep on top of it and write another do it yourself credit repair letter a couple of months down the road.
